
EMS (2 weeks)
Working with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), residents’ role includes participation in ACLS and BLS ambulance support as an observer responding to the scene. The experience allows adequate exposure to the pre-hospital care of trauma victims, cardio-pulmonary arrest patients, and those with minor injuries or complaints.
Trauma (8 weeks)
Residents spend 1 month in the EM1 year and 2 months in each of their EM2 and EM3 years of residency at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, a major level 1 trauma center and part of the New York's Health and Hospital Corporation. The experience includes working as part of the ED trauma team. Residents gain experience and exposure to the assessment and management of trauma victims presenting with injuries from blunt and penetrating trauma. Clinical cases most commonly include victims of gun shot wounds, stab wounds, blunt head trauma, motor vehicle accidents, and pedestrians struck by vehicles.
Peds Trauma (4 weeks)
Residents in their EM2 and EM3 years rotate through the pediatric ED at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. This is a level I trauma center where residents not only have exposure to a wide variety of commonly presenting pediatric complaints but also have the opportunity to care for serious pediatric traumas.
Psychiatry (1 week)
The clinical experience involves working as a member of the Psychiatric ED Evaluation team. Residents receive guidance in the evaluation and management of acute presentations of common psychiatric disorders which include mania, depression, schizophrenia, PTSD, anxiety, and psychosis.
Toxicology (4 weeks)
One block is spent in the second year rotating at the New York Poison Control Center. Working with toxicology fellows and attendings, residents are given a firm grounding in the clinic practice of toxicology. Residents receive lectures and become proficient in toxidromes and other toxicologic presentations.
