Rotating in the Beth Israel ED

Rotation Information

During the 4-week elective, students are expected to act as sub-interns, picking up new patients independently and presenting their cases directly to an ED attending or senior resident.  Participation in notifications and other high acuity cases is not merely encouraged but expected.  Didactic activities include daily morning report and Wednesday resident conferences as well as dedicated medical student skills workshops in SIM lab, orthopedic procedures, suturing, IV placement and ultrasound.

Students are expected to work an average of 12 x 8-hour shifts in four weeks.  The end of clerkship grade is based on shift evaluations, a 15-minute case evidence-based presentation and a quiz taken from a list of assigned reading.

To Apply:

Applicants must have completed clinical rotations in surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology.  To apply for our rotation, you must submit an electronic application through VSAS at https://www.aamc.org/students/medstudents/vsas.  Our elective is listed under host institution “Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai”, elective code “EMR044”.

Unfortunately, due to high demand, we can no longer accept applicants from schools located outside the contiguous 48 states, Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.
