Elective (4 weeks)

Senior residents are granted 1 block to pursue outside interests.

Research/Administration (2 weeks)
Residents utilize this rotation to finalize their research projects and prepare them for publication. In addition, residents act in an administrative role with an introduction to the office management of a busy urban emergency department.  On one day of this rotation, you will accompany a first year resident to 160 Water Street, 23rd Floor to meet with the head of coding, Sharda Budhan, to learn coding and then code 20 charts. MICU (4 weeks)

Residents in their third year rotate in the MICU as senior residents.  This role involves directly caring for critically ill patients and taking consults in the ED and other medical floors. In addition to managing all of the patients in the MICU, residents have the opportunity to perform a wide variety of invasive procedures.

 

Trauma (8 weeks)
Residents spend 1 month in the EM1 year and 2 months in each of their EM2 and EM3 years of residency at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, a major level 1 trauma center and part of the New York's Health and Hospital Corporation. The experience includes working as part of the ED trauma team. Residents gain experience and exposure to the assessment and management of trauma victims presenting with injuries from blunt and penetrating trauma. Clinical cases most commonly include victims of gun shot wounds, stab wounds, blunt head trauma, motor vehicle accidents, and pedestrians struck by vehicles.

Peds Trauma (4 weeks)
Residents in their EM2 and EM3 years rotate through the pediatric ED at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. This is a level I trauma center where residents not only have exposure to a wide variety of commonly presenting pediatric complaints but also have the opportunity to care for serious pediatric traumas.

You are required to contact both rotation coordinators before the start of your rotation: Mr. John Samuels and Dr. Joe Habboushe. Your rotation files and readings were sent out at the beginning of the year, so you should have it.  If you can't find it, you can ask other rotators for it, or contact your rotation coordinators.  Please review the required materials prior to the start of the rotation.
