Resident Life

Being a resident at Beth Israel is like no where else. After a brief Hospital orientation, we have a structured 4-week Department Orientation comprised of didactic sessions, hands-on workshops, clinical shifts, and ambulance ride-alongs. This period also allows you to get to know each other, and settle into life in New York City, a city like no other!

Guidance

Each class of residents is under the general guidance one of the Program Directors, and each resident will meet with them individually on a semi-annual basis. In addition, during Orientation, residents select a faculty member as an advisor, who can provide them with additional guidance and support with regard to research, career options, and general direction. Finally, incoming residents are assigned to senior residents from each year as mentors they can look to for support and guidance.

Social Events

While we work hard in the ED, we also find time for fun. Each year, we have a beach day, most recently held on Fire Island, and a ski/snowboarding trip which has been held anywhere from Hunter Mountain in upstate NY to the Berkshires in Massachusetts. In the spring, we have a retreat, typically held at the home of an attending or resident, in which we discuss and evaluate each clinical rotation, conferences, curriculum, and general issues regarding the program, followed by food, drink, and relaxation. In addition, on the first Wednesday of every month, we have a night out at a local restaurant, bar, or lounge, open to all residents EM or rotators, medical students, spouses, and friends.
